The moment I met you I saw that you were quite unconscious of what you really are, what you really might be. There was so much about you that charmed me that I felt I must tell you something about yourself.

Realize your youth while you have it. Don’t squander the gold of your days, listening to the tedious, trying to improve the hopeless failure, or giving away your life to the ignorant, the common, and the vulgar, which are the aims, the false ideals, of our age.

Live! Live the wonderful life that is in you! Let nothing be lost upon you. Be always searching for new sensations. Be afraid of nothing.

In Bali, I am intoxicated, infatuated, always in love, the endless sky, the spectacular Indian Ocean, the crashing waves casting a spell on me, one incantation after another.

Bali, you are pure magic.

You will begin to touch heaven in the moment that you touch perfect speed. And that isn’t flying a thousand miles an hour, or a million, or flying at the speed of light. Because any number is a limit, and perfection doesn’t have limits. Perfect speed, my son, is being there.

Love happened at a side street canteen in Kuta in the form of Teh Botol Sosro. I took in this beautiful sweet cold drink made from jasmine and Indonesian gambier flowers, and thought to myself, my niece is going to annihilate this. Everything I had in Bali was a postcard to my family and the things they loved: Nasi Goreng, Mie Goreng, fried bananas, coffee and eggs sunny side up. This is for them, and all the “We are on our way back, would you like some Nasi Goreng?” phone calls, for all the mornings the entire house would be perfumed with coffee. I am drinking Kopi Bali every day now, and it is beautiful!

“Do you like banana or pancake?” Ijal and the boys ask me. I already know what they mean (hint: they like pancakes). They are containing their laughter, but these young surfers, so bright and healthy and happy, are ready to burst.

“I like banana pancakes?” I say, also ready to break.

(We had banana pancakes with Bali coffee at breakfast the day, and they were amazing.)

They teach me a few bad words and howl with laughter at every word I’d repeat. I crack up too, the words being so close to Filipino. I try to memorize their faces in the hopes that they might memorize mine, meeting them for the first time and already wondering if we’ll ever see each other again.

5.30 pm. Kix, Res and I emerge from one of the best massages of our lives. Just an hour earlier we were almost sure at least one of us (myself) was going to disintegrate in the sun. The massage had given us back all the limbs and senses we were afraid of losing in the narrow Poppies Lane. We would have stayed longer, but now it was time for the greatest show on Earth.

We walk back to the shore in complete awe – suddenly Bali had become another shade of beautiful – the air, cooler, the colors, deeper. Agus lights up as he sees us return. The young surfers start handing out shots of vodka. The beach, which had been a lullaby all afternoon, was now brimming with people and conversations, everything and everyone alive – the sky, the wind, the waves, the street behind us. The sun sets, and we are set in motion – the anticipation, the possibilities, the thirst. The sky was on fire, and all our hearts, with it. There is a collective silence as the sun makes its descent, and it is absolute magic hearing this stillness, myself and all these silhouettes in the horizon, awake and living, at/for this moment in time.

Coral, then vermillion, then a great glorious gold. The sun plunges into the ocean. Scarlet, then crimson, then Alchemy, the deepest veils of purple flood the sky.

At night in Kuta, everyone lives, and everything begins.

Aku cinta kamu, Bali. Selamat malam.

Thank you Kix and Res. ♥ I cannot wait to go back.

I was watching her in the beautiful light. She was about to be engaged at sunset – she didn’t know it, of course, but we did – and there I was swimming in the glow this girl radiated, this girl who just wakes up and lives. The beautiful Kim, who (spoiler alert) said yes.

I knew this was going to be one of the most important work I would ever do. Not just beautiful or exciting or sentimental, but important. Ena has always been, in my nostalgia at least, one of those people you wanted to be around. She wears her heart and life and passion on her sleeve, and the most wonderful thing about her is that she makes you feel you can do all those things too – to wear your heart, to live your life. I didn’t realise just how important it would be until that evening on the beach when, after the most amazing sunset that ever lived had just plunged into the ocean, Ena in the dark, asked Kim, in front of their family and friends, to marry her.

Ena cried. Kim cried. I cried (hold on tears, I said, I can’t blur my vision just yet).

I thank the universe for everything that led me to this. These photos are as much for me as they are for this beautiful family. This is life right here. On your knees, in the dark, salt in your eyes and skin, the sea in your lips and hair, sand and rocks and the ocean at your feet, love in every vein.

Thank you Ena, Kim, Erica and Sophia for this infinite day. ♥

Here I came to the very edge
where nothing at all needs saying,
everything is absorbed through weather and the sea,
and the moon swam back,
its rays all silvered,
and time and again the darkness would be broken
by the crash of a wave,
and every day on the balcony of the sea,
wings open, fire is born,
and everything is blue again like morning.

The pale stars were sliding into their places. The whispering of the leaves was almost hushed. All about them it was still and shadowy and sweet. She was laughing. She was nervous. Thank you, she’d call out to her friends every now and again. Her voice was shaking, her heart beating. Ena in the sunset, so beautiful, and in love and absolute.

Where is she? I keep on asking
if your eyes disappear.
How long she’s taking! I think, and I’m hurt.
I feel poor, foolish and sad,
and you arrive and you are lightning
glancing off the peach trees.

That’s why I love you and yet not why.
There are so many reasons, and yet so few,
for love has to be so,
involving and general,
particular and terrifying,
joyful and grieving,
flowering like the stars,
and measureless as a kiss.

“Do you feel that?”
She asked as we watched
the stars and moon illuminate
the sea before us.
“Tell me you feel it?
that longing to not just exist,
but to live and to live beautifully?”
I, with a smile filled with so
much truth it could move

“Of course I feel it. The heart
in you, is the heart in me.”

Filipino mythology with a twist, said my good friend Niner Guiao of Eskritoryo Pilipinas when she asked me to do a shoot for Polecats Manila’s 4th Anniversary Show. The twist, of course, was pole dancing, hoops and silks. I thank Niner for the challenge and the confidence, and the incredible dancers of Polecats Manila for introducing me to the awesome world of aerial arts!

Amihan: Indayog at Lahi is happening this Sunday, November 3 at the Meralco Theater in Pasig. Tickets are available at all SM Tickets branches and at the Polecats Manila Studio. Proceeds of Amihan will be going to the Eskritoryo Pilipinas reading and writing program for children called “Kwentong Munti.”

(You can also take part by joining the Sponsored Seats Initiative, where your contribution of Php300 will give children the opportunity to watch and learn from the show through our partnerships with Teach for the Philippines and Virlanie Foundation.)

Oh and guess what? Kuya Bodjie will be hosting the show!

Oh, what strange wonderful clocks women are. They nest in Time. They make the flesh that holds fast and binds eternity. They live inside the gift, know power, accept, and need not mention it. It was an extraordinarily hot summer, even for us here in the tropics. So naturally, there had to be a deluge on the day of our shoot. It turned out wonderful, with Audrey so luminous against the rain, eating Shakey’s pizza and contemplating names for her firstborn. I worked with the always amazing Monique Jaramillo-Señeres here, and many times during the day we’d forget that this dainty little creature here, so exquisite and tiny and radiant, was seven months pregnant.

Ruth and Anthony are two of the most amazing, most hilarious people you’ll ever meet, and I’m not just saying this because I personally witnessed the backseat of our speeding car transform into the backstage of a runway show, with full hair and makeup and reflective discussions on stallions, godfathers and missionary camps transpiring between horse riding, tree climbing, sunset chasing and swing making (as in, we were making swings).

It is always an event every time these two find their way back to the Philippines, and I am rewarded every second, as a friend and as a photographer, with the love and time and trust they give me. Everything you see here is exactly that. Their love. Their time. Themselves. And their complete confidence in me, to go barefoot on sharp, slippery rocks during high tide, make out at high noon in long sleeves in 36 degrees Celsius siesta weather, and stay still and smiling for the cameras while their horses relieve themselves. I love you De Castros. Thank you. I couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day, and I am beyond excited at the days ahead. ♥
