Today is such a day.

Into the wind,
the same wind that the clouds feel,
the bright rivers and the turning mills
that stand slowly grinding at the sky’s edge.
Now I too am a thing held in its hand,
the smallest thing under the sky.

I want to be a mirror for your whole body, and I never want to be blind, or to be too old to hold up your heavy and swaying picture. I want to unfold. I don’t want to stay folded anywhere, because where I am folded, there I am a lie, and I want my grasp of things to be true before you. I want to describe myself like a painting that I looked at closely for a long time, like a saying that I finally understood, like the pitcher I use every day, like the face of my mother, like a ship that carried me through the wildest storm of all.

In the fall, I believe again in poetry
if nothing else it is
a movement of the mind.

But the mind trembles
here, on the brink
the mind trembles
there is life, after all,
there is life, still
unbelief left.

Rest with your dream in my dream.
Love and pain and work should all sleep, now.
The night turns on its invisible wheels,
and you are pure beside me as a sleeping ember.

No one else, Love, will sleep in my dreams. You will go, we will go together, over the waters of time.
No one else will travel through the shadows with me, only you, evergreen, ever sun, ever moon.

Thank you Gilded By Ruth de Castro for the beautiful styling!

I was watching her in the beautiful light. She was about to be engaged at sunset – she didn’t know it, of course, but we did – and there I was swimming in the glow this girl radiated, this girl who just wakes up and lives. The beautiful Kim, who (spoiler alert) said yes.

I knew this was going to be one of the most important work I would ever do. Not just beautiful or exciting or sentimental, but important. Ena has always been, in my nostalgia at least, one of those people you wanted to be around. She wears her heart and life and passion on her sleeve, and the most wonderful thing about her is that she makes you feel you can do all those things too – to wear your heart, to live your life. I didn’t realise just how important it would be until that evening on the beach when, after the most amazing sunset that ever lived had just plunged into the ocean, Ena in the dark, asked Kim, in front of their family and friends, to marry her.

Ena cried. Kim cried. I cried (hold on tears, I said, I can’t blur my vision just yet).

I thank the universe for everything that led me to this. These photos are as much for me as they are for this beautiful family. This is life right here. On your knees, in the dark, salt in your eyes and skin, the sea in your lips and hair, sand and rocks and the ocean at your feet, love in every vein.

Thank you Ena, Kim, Erica and Sophia for this infinite day. ♥

Here I came to the very edge
where nothing at all needs saying,
everything is absorbed through weather and the sea,
and the moon swam back,
its rays all silvered,
and time and again the darkness would be broken
by the crash of a wave,
and every day on the balcony of the sea,
wings open, fire is born,
and everything is blue again like morning.

The pale stars were sliding into their places. The whispering of the leaves was almost hushed. All about them it was still and shadowy and sweet. She was laughing. She was nervous. Thank you, she’d call out to her friends every now and again. Her voice was shaking, her heart beating. Ena in the sunset, so beautiful, and in love and absolute.

Where is she? I keep on asking
if your eyes disappear.
How long she’s taking! I think, and I’m hurt.
I feel poor, foolish and sad,
and you arrive and you are lightning
glancing off the peach trees.

That’s why I love you and yet not why.
There are so many reasons, and yet so few,
for love has to be so,
involving and general,
particular and terrifying,
joyful and grieving,
flowering like the stars,
and measureless as a kiss.

“Do you feel that?”
She asked as we watched
the stars and moon illuminate
the sea before us.
“Tell me you feel it?
that longing to not just exist,
but to live and to live beautifully?”
I, with a smile filled with so
much truth it could move
the clouds, said to her:
“Of course I feel it. The heart
in you, is the heart in me.”

Congratulations Kim and Ena!!!

It was an extraordinarily hot summer, even for us here in the tropics. So naturally, there had to be a deluge on the day of our shoot. It turned out wonderful, with Audrey so luminous against the rain, eating Shakey’s pizza and contemplating names for her firstborn. I worked with the always amazing Monique Jaramillo-Señeres here, and many times during the day we’d forget that this dainty little creature here, so exquisite and tiny and radiant, was seven months pregnant.

Here’s a toast to the rainy season, the first days of class, and to mothers all around the world.

Solid the spaces lean on, envious.

The 70’s have always seemed to me a decade of one endless golden summer, of my parents in love and in bell bottoms, of Elton John, ABBA, The Bee Gees and Fleetwood Mac. From the most delicate little daisies to a wedding dress found at a vintage store in London, everything about Nick and Mary’s wedding was bewitching. It was every bit a beautiful daydream, made even more enchanting by the pouring rain and the glorious Tararuas. Put on your rose colored glasses, or in this case, some far out oversized amber glasses, and prepare yourselves for some earnest retrospection. Ooh I hear laughter in the rain, walking hand in hand with the one I love. Ooh how I love the rainy days and the happy way I feel inside…

Now the sky could be blue, I don’t mind, without you it’s a waste of time. Could be blue, could be grey, without you
I’m just miles away.

When I first got to know Jay and Eileen, I felt like they been together for a lifetime. They actually met on a blind date in 2008, and it wasn’t until a chance encounter in 2011 when fate stepped in and decided to change their lives forever. From that first afternoon with them, they too made me feel like I had known them for years. Their happiness is so contagious and uplifting that I already start laughing the minute I see them. I can’t wait to post photos from their gorgeous wedding, but for now here’s a look at their engagement session. ♥ (You can also see more of their handsome little boy Noah here.)
